Bead Size Guide: Choosing the Right Bead Sizes for Your Bracelet
Bead size is the single biggest design decision you will make when stringing a bracelet. It changes how many beads you need, how the bracelet drapes on the wrist, and whether the finished piece feels delicate or bold. Here is a practical way to choose.
The common bead sizes, in plain terms
- 4mm – delicate and understated. Works beautifully as a solo strand for a minimalist look, or as spacer beads between larger stones.
- 6mm – the sweet spot for women's bracelets. Enough presence to read clearly from a distance, still light on the wrist.
- 8mm – the most popular size for gemstone bracelets. Comfortable for most wrists and substantial enough for men's designs.
- 10mm and up – statement territory. Use fewer beads, and consider them for chunky, masculine, or healing-stone styles.
How many beads do you need?
A simple formula: wrist circumference in millimetres divided by bead diameter, plus about 10% for spacing and the drape of the strand. A 16cm (160mm) wrist needs roughly 20 beads at 8mm, or 26–27 beads at 6mm.
Mixing sizes on one strand
Mixed-size bracelets look intentional when you alternate with a rhythm, for example 8mm – 4mm – 8mm – 4mm, or a graduated run from small near the clasp to large in the centre. Avoid random mixing; the eye picks up inconsistency immediately.

Check the fit before you string
Our free bracelet size calculator converts wrist measurements into bead counts for any size, including inside-diameter adjustments for chunky beads. If you want to see the proportions live, the online bracelet designer lets you place 4mm, 6mm and 8mm beads on a virtual strand before you commit.
Start with 8mm if you are unsure – it is the size that suits the widest range of wrists and styles.
